Because Sustainable Carolina is housed within UNC Institute for the Environment, we are also part of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
Faculty members that are a part of UNC Institute for the Environment usually retain appointments within their academic departments. Through this faculty, the Institute carries a great breadth and depth of knowledge, and much of it is related to sustainability.

Sustainability Prize for Excellence in Undergraduate Research
Sustainable Carolina partners with the UNC Office of Undergraduate Research for its annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research. Sustainable Carolina offers first, second and third place prizes for excellence in sustainability research.
Students who wish to be considered for these prizes must opt in when filling out their poster submission form on the Celebration of Undergraduate Research. Students must also complete Sustainable Carolina’s form, available by clicking the green button below.

Sustainable Triangle Field Site
The UNC Institute for the Environment Sustainable Triangle Field Site (STFS) gives students the unique opportunity to use campus as a living laboratory. Students explore urban planning and design, hydrology and ecosystem health in the context of sustainability. The course runs during the spring semester and can be taken as part of the sustainability minor.

Campus Partners
EcoStudio: This partnership between the UNC Environment, Ecology and Energy program and the UNC Institute for the Environment matches students with internship experiences.
Environment, Ecology and Energy program: Offers undergraduate degrees in environmental science and environmental studies; also has a sustainability minor for students outside of these two majors. Three professional schools offer dual degrees related to sustainability, which are all administered through E3P.
- UNC School of Library and Information Science (environmental informatics dual degree)
- Hussman School of Journalism and Media (environment and science communication dual degree)
- UNC School of Government (environmental science and public administration dual degree).
UNC Department of City and Regional Planning: Offers an undergraduate minor in urban studies and planning; also offers master’s and doctorate programs.
UNC Department of Geography: Undergraduate students majoring in grography can focus on climatology, diversity and justice, geographic information science and spatial analysis, urban development and planning, environmental systems and more.
Ackerman Center for Excellence in Sustainability (ACES): Offers sustainable enterprise electives to undergraduate students; also houses clubs, like the Sustainable Business Club.
