Mark your calendars for March 16-23, 2024 as Orange County gears up for the 3rd annual Creek Week.

What is Creek Week?

Creek Week is a week-long celebration of our amazing waterways and interconnected ecosystems in Orange County! Throughout the week, several organizations host activities like art workshops, litter cleanups, paddling trips and more. On the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, Sustainable Carolina and UNC Environment, Health and Safety coordinate activities for students, staff and faculty.

How can community members get involved?

Community members can attend events, or even host their own! They can also share social media posts to help get the word out about Creek Week.

At Carolina, we encourage University departments and student organizations to host their own events. These might include:

  • Organize a litter cleanup (we’ll help you with the supplies and trash pickup, where possible).
  • Host a water-themed crafts event.
  • Host a talk on an important stormwater concept, such as native plants, preventing pollution or environmental justice.
  • Organize a clothing swap.
  • Host a trivia night, karaoke party, film screening, story hour or other performance.
  • Organize a paddle trip or boat building competition at a nearby waterway.
  • Create activity packs for kids/families.
  • Create a booklist about water or a playlist with water songs.
  • Pledge to reduce or eliminate disposable items in your organization.
  • Create a Creek Week themed menu item at a local restaurant or coffee shop.

What support can Orange County Creek Week provide?

We’re here to help you figure out how  to connect your work with local waterways. We’ll brainstorm ideas and promote your activity.

Who do I contact?

For UNC-Chapel Hill focused events, contact Abigail Brewer at Abigail.Brewer@unc.edu. If you want to coordinate a litter cleanup on campus, reach out to Janet Clarke at jlclarke@ehs.unc.edu. If your event is in the wider Chapel Hill/Carrboro community, reach out to Sammy Bauer at sbauer@townofchapelhill.org by January 10. Let’s make this Creek Week the most fun and inclusive one yet!

Who organizes Creek Week?

The Creek Week team includes UNC-Chapel Hill; Orange County; Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA); the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough; Eno River Association; and Haw River Assembly.

Orange County Creek Week is also part of Regional Creek Week, hosted by the Clean Water Education Partnership (CWEP), which includes our neighbors across the Triangle.
