The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranked No. 21 globally and No. 3 nationally in the 2019 Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University Rankings. The annual GreenMetric Ranking ranks campus sustainability worldwide. The 2019 survey was the largest yet and included 780 universities from 85 countries, including 34 participating U.S. universities.
Campuses are evaluated in six criteria and indicators and UNC-Chapel Hill performed exceptionally well in the Setting and Infrastructure (No. 4), Waste (No. 7), and Water (No. 9) portions.
Launched in 2010 by Universitas Indonesia, GreenMetric officials describe their rankings as “the first and only university rankings in the world that measure each participating university’s commitment in developing an ‘environmentally friendly’ infrastructure. The rankings look at 6 indicators of each university (setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste, water, transportation and education).”
