Champion Sustainability Internship
Sustainable Carolina is excited to offer four internship positions during summer 2023, in partnership with Hanesbrands. Interns will be hosted by Sustainable Carolina and will work closely with Hanesbrands sustainability staff to gain hands-on experience with a global company. Internships will be held in summer 2023 (June through August). These internships are a natural extension of our work with Winston-Salem based Hanesbrands to advance sustainability on campus and around the world.

Cold Water Wash Marketing Campaign

HBI is a sustainable company committed to making a positive difference in our communities and around the world. HBI has teamed up with Tide, along with a few well-known spokespeople, to educate consumers about the benefits of washing in cold water. This includes saving money and energy and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, all without sacrificing exceptionally clean clothes.
Internship Overview
The two students selected for this internship will work individually and together. The selected students will work with Sustainable Carolina professional staff to develop a social marketing strategy to bring HBI’s cold water wash campaign to college campuses. Using Carolina as a case study, the goal is to launch a successful pilot campaign to inspire campuses across the nation to promote cold water wash. A solid understanding of core marketing principles is essential to crafting the cold water wash campaign strategy. At the end of the summer, the intern team will present a final report to HBI’s sustainability team, Sustainable Carolina, and UNC Auxiliary Services.
Responsibilities
- Perform SWOT/situational analysis of student laundry behavior.
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of cold water wash versus hot water wash.
- Develop social marketing strategy and materials to encourage students to wash clothes in cold water.
- Complete a final report on the best strategy, proposed changes to UNC laundry operations, and final conclusions, and proposed action steps.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
The ideal candidate will enjoy being part of a team and will possess the following:
- Must be an undergraduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, currently enrolled in a B.A./B.S. degree program.
- A passion for exploring and testing innovation.
- Cross-functional worker with internal and external teams.
- High level of organization and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Curious self-starter with problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills and presentation skills.

Energy Efficiency Policy Review

HBI and UNC-CH have similar goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as possible. One important strategy to reducing emissions is making operations more energy efficient. The Inflation Reduction Act provides many new opportunities for organizations to expedite energy efficiency implementation.
Internship Overview
The two students selected for this internship will work individually and together. This interns will work with Sustainable Carolina professional staff to review the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to identify how the bill can be utilized to implement energy efficiency on Carolina’s campus and in HBI operations. A solid understanding of federal policy is essential to be able to determine the potential benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act for Carolina and HBI. At the end of the summer, the intern team will present a final report to HBI’s sustainability team and Sustainable Carolina.
Responsibilities
- Review Inflation Reduction Act and identify sections applicable to Carolina and HBI.
- Identify measures that can benefit the organizations and advance sustainability goals.
- Develop a strategy for applying for Inflation Reduction Act funds.

Complete a final report on the strategies for applying the IRA and the best measures that could be implemented at Carolina and Hanesbrands to improve sustainability in the short and long term.
